I totally ignore "sow before" dates. Seeds can't read 'em anyway. All it means is that by law a certain percentage of seeds have to germinate (did you know that? and the rate is lower for parsnips otherwise you wouldn't be able to sell parsnip seed at all because they're buggers to germinate). And after that date, the rate might be less than is legal. But some of them will still come up. You hear stories of hundred-year-old seeds from some Victorian botanist's collection being sowed and coming up, so give it a try.

I love the optimism and enthusiasm of this time of year, planning what to plant and looking forward to the harvest to come. Good luck with your dead twig though - I think that might be pushing optimism a bit too far. If I was you I'd go out and buy a healthy blackcurrant plant just to cover your bases. They're cheap in Lidl.

Nice to read about you gardening again :-) Courgettes are OK planted in April or May and you can plant direct into growbags. Peas and mangetout - essentially the same thing. I've not tried them in a tub but dwarf beans in a tub worked well, so similar. Slugs always get most of ours lol.
